Presenting Companies: Izun Pharmaceuticals

Core Business / Technology

Izun is an emerging biopharmaceuticals company with a product portfolio of powerful non-steroidal topical oral anti-inflammatory therapies with superior efficacy and safety to current periodontal treatments. The company’s core technology utilizes naturally derived pharmaceutical actives for the treatment of oral disease with inflammatory components. The novel therapies contain multiple synergistic metabolites and multiple therapeutic effects.

Main Markets / Applications

The company follows a market driven product development strategy focusing on multi-billion dollar markets with unmet medical needs for effective oral therapeutics.

PerioPatch® is targeted to the estimated $2 billion plus marketplace for effective gingivitis and periodontitis therapies. It is estimated that over 45% of the US population over the age of 19 suffers from periodontitis and 85% of the population suffers from gingivitis. Current therapies have cumulative sales of approximately $75MM, leaving a vast untapped market for an effective product.

Main Products Marketed or Under Development

  • PerioPatch _, a topical patch treatment, works by reducing proinflammatory cytokines IL-1 ß, TNF_, MMP-2 and MMP-9. PerioPatch® has also been proven to significantly reduce local ß -glucuronidase activity. ß -glucuronidase is an enzyme is released by neutrophils into the tissue which causes much of the localized destruction in periodontitis. The reduction of this enzyme reflects the effectiveness of PerioPatch in clinically reducing disease activity.
  • SynSoreTM works by reducing inflammation, MMP activity and chemotaxis as well mechanically and chemically coating the lesion. Studies have shown 50% pain relief from aphthous ulcers in first _ hour after treatment and continuous improvement over a 24 hour period without rebound pain.
  • SynFresh is a periodontal anti-Inflammatory and antiseptic oral rinse with possible applications in gingivitis, periodontitis, dry mouth (Xerostomia,) aphthous ulcers and chemotherapy associated oral mucositis. The current marketplace for oral rinses is $3.3 billion, and is also dominated with products that have low efficacy rates and short term results against gingivitis, dry mouth and stomatitis. The product's primary mechanism of action is through the reduction of inflammation through reduction of cytokines and MMPs.
  • ViroSyn is a topical treatment targeted to the estimated $900+MM market for effective treatments for oral herpes, or cold sores. Nearly one-third of the total US population is infected with oral herpes and only 1-3% use prescription products. A full 50% use no products whatsoever because of lack of proven efficacy. The product offers a new approach to the treatment of oral viral sores because it is both virucidal and promotes tissue healing by the downregulation of cytokines and MMPs.
