Presenting Companies: Atox Bio

Core Business / Technology

Atox Bio is a biotechnology company committed to development of treatment for diseases mediated by excessive T cell response by a novel superantigen antagonist technology. The main aim of the technology is protection and rescue from the high lethality of Toxic Shock (caused by bioweapons), as well as mortality of Gram-positive Severe Sepsis / Septic Shock, both presenting strong unmet medical needs. Vast commercial potential exists for treatment of autoimmune diseases. This same technology will be used for traditional markets and for biodefense; a dual-purpose strategy.

Main Markets / Applications

Main Markets – Pharmaceutical companies for Gram-positive Severe Sepsis / Septic Shock, Toxic Shock and Autoimmune indications; US DoD, HHS BioShield program for biodefense, EU and Far East governments.

Applications –Various leads of superantigen antagonist demonstrated in vivo- proof of principle by rescue of mice in lethality model recognized internationally and protection of large animals (hundreds of pigs) from incapacitation; pig model was accepted by the FDA as suitable for pre-clinical development, in a pre-IND meeting, that validated the regulatory strategy for biodefense product. Product for Gram-positive Septic Shock is at in-vivo research stage. The Autoimmune product is at in-vivo research stage; dialogue with big Pharma companies is ongoing.

Uniqueness / Advantage over Existing Products

Atox Bio has developed a powerful antagonist of superantigen toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, which comprise well over 20 structurally divergent toxins. This diversity, a complex medical problem, has led to the development of a broad-spectrum superantigen antagonist. Superantigens are toxins, which are potent activators of T-cells and act as potent immunostimulatory proteins. As such, superantigens can have profound effects on the immune system, both acute (such as Toxic Shock and Gram-positive Severe Sepsis / Septic Shock) and long term (autoimmune diseases). The uniqueness of Atox Bio’s approach is its focus on halting the "toxicity cascade" before the activation of T-cells occurs. Atox Bio has discovered novel targets for superantigen mode of action that establish a platform technology for discovery of novel antagonist product candidates, both small molecules and peptides. This platform technology enables treatment of Gram-positive Severe Sepsis / Septic Shock and autoimmune diseases. Advantages include:

  • The only efficacious technology - no other identified method was proven to prevent the overwhelming effects on the immune system by excessive T-cell response, caused by superantigens.
  • Platform technology – due to profound understanding of the mechanism of action, which enables a new approach addressing autoimmune diseases.
